While digging a swale, we came across an absurd quantity of rocks. The soil was incredibly compacted and almost 50% rocks by volume, leaving us with a huge pile of rocks after digging the trench. Rather than see these rocks as a liability or waste, we decided to think creatively and use these marginalized materials to frame the edges of the bed.

These rock formations not only help hold the soil in place, but also provide perennial habitat for beneficial insects, arachnids, and small reptiles.
